On the occasion of The Union World Conference on Lung Health 2023 being held in Paris from 15 to 18 November, Global Health Advocates publishes a position paper that summarizes the organisation’s advocacy work in the fight against tuberculosis this year.
Despite increased international mobilisation in recent years, tuberculosis continues to be one of the deadliest infectious diseases of our time. Yes, progress has been made but it is slow: from 2015 to 2022, the cumulative reduction in the TB incidence rate was 8.7% – far from the WHO End TB Strategy milestone of a 50% reduction by 2025. Given that TB is a disease that can be prevented, treated and cured, how can such slow progress be explained?
