HEALTH CIVIL SOCIETY CALLS UPON MEMBER STATES TO SUPPORT EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT’S STRONG STAND ON HEALTH WITHIN THE EU BUDGET 2021-2027

By 10 April 2019No Comments

On 1 April 2019, health civil society has published a statement calling on the Council and its Working Party on Structural Measures, responsible for the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) file, to uphold the improvements to the Health Strand suggested by the European Parliament. The initiative was supported by members of the EU4Health campaign and members of the EU Civil Society Forum on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and viral hepatitis.

Civil society particularly calls upon the Council to support health-friendly amendments of the European Parliament during the inter-institutional negotiations on ESF+, such as, for example, mainstreaming health in all EU policies and implementing systematic health impact assessment of EU policies, adopting a Public Health Strategy,  strengthening public health civil society, including European umbrella organisations.

The full reaction letter can be found here.

Members of the EU Civil Society Forum on HIV/AIDS, TB and viral hepatitis and the Civil Society Forum on Drugs had previously reacted to the European Parliament report on the Commission proposal on ESF+ and Health Strand, welcoming the Parliament’s suggestion to increase the budget for Health Strand and adopt ambitious political leadership for a sustainable regional response to the fight against HIV/AIDS, TB and hepatitis in Europe.
