As the newly-elected MEPs make their return to the European Parliament, Global Health Advocates is sharing with them a welcome pack including a briefing paper, encouraging them to step up their efforts in favour of international cooperation and global health.
As health challenges multiply, exacerbated by climate change and the destruction of biodiversity, it is essential that the European Union maintains its political and financial momentum to support global efforts to prepare for future pandemics, strengthen health systems, and combat health inequalities across the world.
Thanks to their legislative powers, budgetary powers and powers of scrutiny, MEPs are well equipped to make a significant impact in shaping the health future of Europe and the world.
This new legislature will be decisive to:
- Define the priorities and budget for official development assistance (ODA) when the next multiannual financial framework (MFF) is adopted.
- Ensure health is placed at the heart of European policies by promoting and implementing the European Union’s Global Health Strategy.
- Urge the European Commission to respect its budgetary commitments in terms of international solidarity, and to ensure global health is kept as a high priority.
More specifically regarding global health, members of parliament can ensure adequate funding for health policies is granted, support EU partners’ health sovereignty via various mechanisms, as well as ensure that health R&D meet actual needs by placing public interests over private interests.
