How full funding for Gavi can ensure immunisation for all

A new report from ACTION partnership shows that urgent investment in global immunisation is vital to ensure no child dies from preventable diseases.

A Chance to Reach Every Child makes the case for increased donor investments in immunisation programs through Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, a public-private partnership working to expand access to new and underused vaccines in the world’s poorest countries.

In January 2015, Gavi will hold a replenishment conference to mobilise an additional US$ 7.5 billion to fund its 2016-2020 strategy and save 5-6 million lives. The report outlines how much investment each donor should allocate to ensure this target is met.

Working in partnership with donor governments, recipient countries, and international organisations, Gavi has supported more than 70 of the world’s poorest countries to immunise 440 million children, preventing 6 million deaths. But despite progress, one in every five children around the world still cannot access vaccines.

The new report therefore analyses how Gavi can close this inequality gap, act effectively on its 2016-2020 strategy, and meet the global goal of ensuring no child dies from preventable causes. Recommendations include prioritising the hardest–to-reach children, investing in health systems, and playing a greater role in bringing down vaccine prices for governments beyond Gavi’s support
