Sixteen civil society organisations involved in the fight against malnutrition have sent a letter to EU Development Commissioner Piebalgs, UK Prime Minister Cameron, France President Hollande and the Italian Presidency of the EU, containing numerous recommendations prior to the Foreign Affairs Council meeting of 12-15 December 2014. Both the EU’s decision to draft an Action Plan on Nutrition as well as its expressed intention of reducing the number of stunted children under the age of 5 by at least 7 million by 2025 were very much welcomed by NGOs. However, the effectiveness of the Action Plan is to be enhanced by addressing a number of issues such as wasting, nutrition-specific interventions and greater transparency regarding financial disbursements.
