On June 25th, the European Union and the Gates Foundation co-hosted Gavi’s high-level pledging Summit in Brussels, Belgium.
GHA welcomes and commends the European Union for demonstrating strong leadership by co-hosting the Summit, which comes at a critical time for global health. Renewed political and financial commitment are more essential than ever to protect the progress made, and to reach those still left behind. The EU must continue to step up, not step back.
Vaccines are among the most powerful tools we have to save lives, strengthen health systems, and unlock economic potential. Gavi has helped immunise over 1 billion children since its founding, yet millions still lack access to life-saving vaccines, especially in fragile settings. Since its founding in 2000, investments into Gavi’s work have resulted in an estimated $250 billion in economic benefits, making investing in Gavi one of the smartest investments there is.
As stated by President von der Leyen “vaccines do not just save lives, they also help nations to thrive.”
We welcome the European Union’s pledge of €360 million – regarding which we await further details – and which comes as part of the Team Europe total contribution towards the 2026-2030 strategy. We hope this pledge will further cement long lasting EU and Team Europe leadership in global health.
